The word translated “bring them up” is the same word Paul uses in Ephesians 5:29 for how a husband carefully nourishes his own body and how he is to nourish his wife. That is why Christian fatherhood is not the harsh power of Roman patria potestas, but instead is the steady, life-giving care that helps children grow to maturity in Christ.
